The Writers' Guild of America have polled their members and produced a list of their 101 Greatest Screenplays of All-Time. Because a Top 100 wouldn't have been edgy. Charlie's on the list, not once, but three times. “Snakes on a Plane!” as the cool kids are presently shouting. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind clocked in at 24 (between Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz - phwoar), Being John Malkovich hits #74 (between Amadeus and High Noon), and Adaptation does 77 (between, weirdly enough, Raging Bull and Rocky). I'm guessing the order of Charlie's three will surprise some of you. Want the Top Ten?
- Casablanca
- The Godfather
- Chinatown
- Citizen Kane
- All About Eve
- Annie Hall
- Sunset Blvd.
- Network
- Some Like It Hot
- The Godfather II
Four of Francis Ford Coppola's scripts made the cut; ditto Woody Allen and Billy Wilder. William Goldman and John Huston joined Charlie with three each.
If I had known there was a poll coming up, I would've written something.
