'Monopoly,' 'Action Man' & 'Hungry Hungry Hippos' Movies Get Backing, Are Actually Happening Print E-mail
Friday, 5 October 2012

I stole that headline directly from an article on indieWIRE. The article starts:

While a truly original and interesting movie like Charlie Kaufman's "Frank or Francis" struggles to scrape together the $10 million dollars more it needs to get made, it's a pretty good indication of where we're at these days that movies based on Hasbro games/toys "Monopoly," "Action Man" and "Hungry Hungry Hippos" are happening. Because who among us hasn't been sitting down during the fourth hour of a grueling game of "Monopoly" only to say, "Man, this would make a really great movie!" (Source)

Sad, isn't it.

This has been said by a lot of people already but really, somebody should just tell Charlie and the Frank or Francis guys to go ahead and kickstarter it already. Oh, and maybe ALL future Charlie Kaufman movies as well.

I'm not sure Charlie could get 10 million off of Kickstarter. But he definitely will need to learn to make movies for cheap if he wants to continue. He deserves to get all the money that's put into Monopoly and Hungry Hungry Hippos, but that won't happen.

Why not just let Kaufman write the script for Monopoly? Just make Uncle Pennybags into an ennui-ridden artist type who thinks about nothing but himself and death, and then through some bizarre and improbable circumstance becomes involved in a surrealistic dash to acquire properties. Allusions to postmodernist literature (maybe intentional maybe not) and philosophy of mind will be made along the way, but while building hotels that have smaller hotels within them (or something). The film will end with Pennybags miserable, alone, trapped in his own mind, dead, or some combination of these. If we're lucky, though, instead of a soul-crushing profession of nihilism, we will just get a vague and unsatisfying non-ending - an endless recursion of passing Go, if you will.
